John Salvest was born in Kearny, New Jersey and now resides in Jonesboro, Arkansas where he is Professor of Art at Arkansas State University.He earned a B.A. in English from Duke University and an M.A. in English literature and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa.
His mixed-media objects and installations have been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Grand Arts, Kansas City; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; City Gallery at Chastain, Atlanta; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis; Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock; Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Miami and Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York, among others.His work has also been shown in many group exhibitions throughout the United States, including shows at Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; Austin Museum of Art; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; The Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida; The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis and The Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY.
Salvest is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in 1991 and 1993 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1998, as well as State Arts Council Fellowships from New Jersey and Arkansas.He has been awarded commissions for several public art projects, including large-scale works for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis, Tennessee.The Cannon Center project was cited as one of the country's best public art projects by Americans for the Arts Public Art Network's 2004 Year in Review.Salvest has also curated several exhibitions, including Kim Levin: Notes & Itineraries, which traveled internationally to critical acclaim. His work has been reviewed and featured in publications such as Art in America, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Sculpture, Art Papers, The New Art Examiner, NUMBER and ArtLies.
Salvest’s work appears in the public collections of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia; The Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis, TN; New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, New Jersey; University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, Iowa; Arkansas State University Permanent Art Collection, Jonesboro, Arkansas ; and Fidelity Investments, Boston, Massachusetts, as well as numerous private collections.
