Biography

Based in New York City, Chris Minard is a studio artist working in oil painting, mixed media drawing, and printmaking as well as an art director for film and television. He is also an adjunct professor at New York University where he teaches a graduate course in production design at the Tisch School of the Arts.

Artist Statement

Typically working in series by developing on a theme or title, Chris Minard’s work focuses on quiet moments or pauses between actions: realization, reflection, cautious voyeurism, allusive intimacy. Inspired by music, literature, queer histories and culture, along with a background in design for theater and film, the young men who populate his work are found amid natural environments and architecture defined by a bold color palette and classically informed composition. With a style fluctuating like memory between the clarity of tightly observed passages and the emotional inference of more lyrical representations, the enigmatic narratives of his work both frame and ambiguate the figures’ psychological states, revealing and celebrating their moments of vulnerable softness while also challenging the cultural dichotomy of our familiarity with the human body and the lingering taboo around the male form and homoeroticism.
