From this soil new symbols arise, binding the primordial to the contemporary, the erotic to the mundane, the physical to the intangible, subject to forces beyond comprehension, beyond control.

Biography
Josiah Bolth was born in a small town in rural Pennsylvania. From there, a series of tragedies led him to New Orleans. He came to the Mississippi delta like generations of wayfaring strangers before him, guided by dreams and nightmares. A spirit led him southwards, to a place where music can always be heard.
Artist Statement
My work gestates in the space between the dreamworld and our experience of history, memory, and propaganda narratives. From this soil new symbols arise, binding the primordial to the contemporary, the erotic to the mundane, the physical to the intangible, subject to forces beyond comprehension, beyond control. A painting can only allude to the exotic forms that lay dormant at the far edges of the psyche, visions born from ennui, whimsy, anxiety, delusion, spiritual yearning and sexual fantasy. I seek the creation of a figurative space replete with the artifacts of culture and history, of disorganized and unfocused consciousness, murmuring with the promise of stranger forms waiting to be conceived.
