Press Release

(New Orleans, LA) JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is proud to present Pendulum, the second solo exhibition of New Orleans-based artist Aimée Farnet Siegel. The exhibition unveils eleven new, mixed-media paintings by the artist which capture the breadth of her approaches to composition. Undulating between the dense, graphic, and vibrant to more open, organic, and subdued – this exhibition serves as a survey of Siegel’s visual sensibilities.

The artist says of her latest work . . .

A pendulum swings freely yet is tethered. This body of work investigates the energy created by these contradictory and complementary forces.

Raw yet sophisticated, this work oscillates between structured and organic form, clarity and confusion, safety and freedom.

Bold marks and small moments wrestle for attention, encouraging contemplation and close looking.

Some paintings hang traditionally, affixed to the gallery wall, while others are suspended, obstructing space and allowing access to the back of the canvases with their pieced-together history.

Building on previous collage-focused work, this series demonstrates an assured hand and a confidence in melding painterly brushwork with collage.

Driven by her love of materials and process, New Orleans artist Aimée Farnet Siegel works with color, line, and form through the building and manipulation of paper, paint, and canvas. Siegel received her BFA from Louisiana State University and later studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. Her non-objective two and three-dimensional works swing from monochromatic to multicolored with painted and collaged line work creating pattern and shape.

Her work has been exhibited nationally in galleries, institutions, art fair, and alternative spaces nationwide. Most notably, in 2019 Siegel presented an independent site-specific installation in conversation with works in the international group show Hinge Picture at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans – concurrent with her premier solo exhibition at the gallery.

Siegel’s work appears in numerous public and private collections across the country. In 2020 she completed a 48-piece commission for the Four Seasons Hotel, New Orleans and most recently three pieces were acquired for the corporate collection of Morgan Stanley. Her work also appears in the collections of: Walda and Sydney Besthoff, Andrea Andersson and John Cable, Emily and Robert Clay, Dathel and Tommy Coleman, Jennifer and Dennis Lauscha, and Hy’s Steakhouse, Toronto.

The exhibition will be on view from 18 October through 16 December 2023 with an opening reception on Saturday 4 November and a closing reception on Saturday 2 December coinciding with the Arts District of New Orleans’ (ADNO) monthly First Saturday Gallery Openings from 5 – 9 PM.
